2020 Statuesque
(40% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Syrah & 26% Petite Sirah) 2020 Statuesque is a beautiful expression of a wild wine that is now tamed with smooth taste and charming elegance. The bold and enticing aromas draw you into the glass, with notes of blueberry, blackberry, plum, pepper and herbs. The palate carries impressive weight and volume with seemingly never-ending textures. I love that this wine is huge in flavors yet balanced throughout the expansive palate. It is certainly captivating, intriguing, and exceptionally lengthy with tannins that sing all the way through the finish. Bouquets of mocha coffee, bittersweet chocolate, cherry, and cedar are well defined. Not at all overripe, it brings a fine feel and finish of acidity and tannin.. Best to drink after 2025, but I confidently predict it will have a very long life beyond that!

Production notes
The grapes were delivered to Sculpterra Winery in ½ ton picking bins and immediately taken to be destemmed, followed by a 36-hour cold soak at a cold 45 degrees Fahrenheit. It was easy to see that this fruit was of the highest quality, especially the dark and vibrant Petite Sirah grapes. Once again, we fermented and aged each of these 3 grape varieties independently, giving this wine a super complex texture and unique flavor profile. Pump-overs were conducted just twice a day and limited the juice exposure to unnecessary oxygen impact. Fermentation was followed by draining the “free run” juice then next we moved to the pressing of the skins, settling for 3 days in stainless tanks and finally long-term barrel aging. This remarkable wine was aged completely in 500L Puncheons barrels; totaling 6 Cabernet Puncheons, 5 Syrah Puncheons, and 4 Petite Sirah Puncheons. 6 of these barrels were brand new and add a great deal of vanilla, coffee, molasses and butterscotch taste to the wine. The wine was blended and lightly filtered one week prior to bottling. The wine aged in bottle for over a full year before officially being released on September 1st 2023.

2020 marks our fifteen year in producing this incredible unique, bold, and wild blend labelled Statuesque. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Petite Sirah, this is inevitability one to be enjoyed upon release but rest assured it is also meant for long term cellaring. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Petite Sirah were farmed and grown on the Frankel Family Estate, while the Syrah was grown on neighboring vineyard of Eugene Alonso’s property on Penman Springs Road. The combination of well drained clay-loam soils with diurnal temperature swings create full bodied flavors in this wine. From pruning, to shoot-thinning, leaf pulling and harvesting, these vineyards are completely hand manicured and diligently cared for every step of the way. I was happy with the 2020 growing season, where intense heat waves gave forth to an early harvest. The color of the juice was exceedingly dark in 2020; acid levels were restrained and tannins were prominent in the berries.
