93 POINTS - Wine Enthusiast

2018 Sculpterra Figurine is our classic trademark blend of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Primitivo, and 12% Merlot. It opens with aromas of raspberry pie crust, black pepper, licorice candy, lilac, baked earth and ends on toasted oak. The mirage of light red fruits provided by Primitivo and the wholesome integration of dark fruits delivered by Cabernet make this blend vibrant, expressive and all around charming. Plum, cherry soda aromas, mocha and black pepper bouquets dominate on the nose, while the mouthfeel is smoothly layered and integrated with new American oak barrels. These woody spice notes carry throughout the wine’s broad palate, decorating the savory black olive, charred meat and oregano spice taste. The wine’s overall fruity taste is offset and framed by dry and polished tannins. This wine is well worth cellaring for many years to come, but do yourself a favor and try some right now!

Production notes

These hand-picked grapes were destemmed, fermented, pressed and racked into barrels at Sculpterra’s onsite winery. After harvest, barrels were tasted and evaluated to be a part of this Primitivo, Cab and Merlot blend; only the best barrels made the cut! This wine combines two lots of Primitivo, three lots of Cabernet Sauvignon and one lot of Merlot. The complexity in this wine is truly breathtaking, as a plethora of diverse aromas will surely fill your senses with each sip. The three lots of Cabernet were harvest from three unique vineyard sites, and give this wine rich tannic structure, dark-berry fruits and plenty of spice on the finish. Primitivo was made in two lots, one at the beginning of harvest and the other towards the end of harvest. Thus, the Primitivos are at two ends of the ripeness spectrum and offer light to intense fruity flavors, with great complexity. Finally, Merlot, picked in one lot, is a super balanced product. With nice notes of Christmas spice, ginger, and strawberry, this Merlot is the final piece that holds this entire blend together.

93 POINTS

Dark aromas of blueberry and dried carnation pick up a toasty tone on the nose of this blend of 46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Primitivo and 12% Merlot. The smooth palate is well integrated, showing crushed slate minerality, dark berry, plum and dried fennel atop a chiseled structure.

Matt Kettmann, Wine Enthusiast

Figurine has been a hit since its inception and this 2018 vintage is another testament to “no rules in blending.” It is just a balanced wine that hits all corners of the taster’s palate in a beautiful way. 2018 was a fantastic growing year for Frankel Family Estate. Heavy off-season rains were followed by a temperate spring and hot summer. Fall weather was on the warmer side, which greatly aided in the ripening of these three grapes. Our conventional farming practices include drip irrigation, ripping in between every row, disking, mulching old pruned wood and hand-manicuring fruit from budbreak to fruit dropping. Harvest started in mid-September and was wrapped by Halloween.
