Tasting notes

2020 Sculpterra Paso Pink Rosé wine is a beautiful pink-red in the glass, bursting with the freshest aromas possible! There are nuances of fresh apple flavors on this wine's nose creating a sense of a larger tasting mouthfeel to follow. The palate offers tons of tropical play as well as classic ripe strawberries. It finishes smooth and off-dry, with lovely length and a continuing puckering taste that leaves you wanting more and more! My favorite fruit aromas offered in this wine are the constant notes of dried orange-peel with guava and tangerine accents. Lastly, it has depth and I am suggesting that 1-2 years in bottle is possible for this gem but please drink it now for the freshest experience imaginable.

Production notes

Sculpterra Winery takes its Rosé winemaking protocol very seriously, sticking to the philosophy of individually made lots combined right before bottling to create complexity and the best stand-out flavors possible. With that said, these grapes are picked at ripeness, usually around 24.5 – 27.5 BRIX. The “Bleed,” the stealing of the juice off the skins, is implemented 18-24 hours after the grapes are crushed, thus the juice is a darker red than common Rosé wines, and certainly gives us riper fruit flavors without sacrificing acidity and mouthfeel. I love the high tone fruit nature of this wine followed by mouth gripping and tight acidity. This wine is a blend of four fermented lots; two vineyards of Grenache, one vineyard of Syrah, and one vineyard of Mourvédre. Each variety brings drastically different flavors and taste in the final blend. The Grenache lots, pale pink in color, offer an abundance of light tangerine, and melon flavors, while Syrah adds darker color and notes of strawberry fruit and slight herbal taste. Finally, Mourvédre, our most complex tasting rosé, shows off pink color packed with stone fruit aromas and even apple-pear flavors hold on the finish. We tank fermented the wine at a cool 55-degrees Fahrenheit. The wine was bottle just 3 months of total age totaling 875 cases.

Our 2020 Paso Pink Rosé wine is an amazing tasting experience and like the 2019 it is our biggest bottling of Rosé to date, totaling 875 cases! 2020 was the most challenging year we have seen since the frosty vintage of 2011. The growing season of 2020 was an uphill battle with late budbreak and long berry set, which was only delayed further by California fires, then incredible heat waves during summer and fall, ending in a surprisingly early harvest. Fortunately, we were unaffected by smoke and other natural occurrences of the year, and I am happy to say that this Rosé could be our best one created to date! This wine is a combination of three unique Rhone varieties, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Syrah. The Grenache came from two vineyards; Sculpterra’s own “El Libro” block, and Rafael Jimenez’s San Miguel Vineyard entitled, “Sol Para Todo.” Mourvédre again came from the Sculpterra Estate in the coveted, “Lago De Los Patos" block, while the Syrah was grown at Eugene Alonso’s “Penman Springs” vineyard. The diversity in these vineyard’s landscape, soil, hand implemented farming practices, and individual climates created a wonderful complex tasting wine.
