2019 Grenache
This wine is spectacular and currently my personal favorite Grenache bottling thus far at Sculpterra Winery! It offers such a wide array of strawberry, red plum, and pomegranate flavors, followed by sage and clove spice on the finish. It is primarily a fruit driven wine while offering a reasonable abundance of floral notes like jasmine, dark hibiscus, lavender and hints ground pepper. The mouthfeel is hearty, with wild cherry fruit at the core of each sip. This wine shows wonderful fruity aromas but contains terrific firm structure that lends itself to years of aging. This wine is a keeper, and at only 600 cases produced, you better get it now before it’s all gone.

Production notes
All fruit was whole berry destemmed, fermented, pressed, and barreled at Sculpterra’s onsite winery. The lots were kept separated throughout the wine making process, creating unique and individual characteristics in each wine made. This wine was made in three different lots, two Grenache lots and one Petite Sirah lot. The two Grenache lots, were dramatically different from each other, but work astonishingly well when blended together! Sculpterra’s Estate Grenache from the “El Libro” block showcases amazing dark rich color, with tons of fruit followed by a big bold mouthfeel. Rafael Jimenez vineyard’s Grenache, shows much more reserved character, highlighted with upfront spice notes, a medium body and firm acidity. Finally, just one barrel of Petite Sirah form Sculpterra’s “Lago De Los Patos” block was added, giving the wine a glorious mouthfeel packed with dark fruits and greatly increased textures and tannins. Overall the addition of Petite Sirah added a dry and puckering sensation to the wine’s finish.

I am very excited to present our 2019 Grenache, a wine that contains an amazing complexity of aromas and ends with a terrific finish. Personally, I feel this is our best vintage of Grenache and it is very easy to see why! The flavors pop out of the glass, with bright, fruit-forward notes of jolly rancher candy, raspberry and strawberry jam. Also, the wines show herbs and spices and the palate is richly delicious. The vintage was nothing short of a perfect growing season for Grenache. We had no frost damage in spring which led to the biggest crop on record! The spring and summer weather were mild and sugar development in the berry was slow and steady, just how we like it! In fact, this was our latest harvest ever for this grape, picking our estate fruit on November 8, 2019. Our estate vineyard has a unique terroir of high steep slopes, with clay-loam soils mixed with limestone. Rafael’s Grenache vineyard in San Miguel sees extensive heat, giving the fruit optimum ripeness and the fruitiest taste imaginable. Finally, our estate grown Petite Sirah, growing on north-south facing rows, shows tremendous balance of sugar and acid while generally being very tannic.
